Which Documents Required for opening Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna Account In India? [List]

If you are eligible to open Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna account, as per eligibility criterion showed here and decided to open a sukanya samriddhi account then, accept my congratulations. It's a great decision to secure future of your daughter. Now, coming back to formalities, in general, you will need following documents to open an SSY account:

1. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Scheme Account Opening Form (you can download from the RBI website here, or get it from bank and post office)

2. Passport size photograph (mandatory, both yours and girl child)

3. Copy of ID proof (mandatory)

4. Birth Certificate copy of girl child (mandatory, to verify the age of your daughter)

5. Residence proof – as per RBI KYC policy (optional if you have already submitted or have existing relationship with bank you are opening account)

Most important thing is SSY form, which you can download the SSY account opening form in PDF format either from RBI, or you can get it from the bank or post office.  Here is how the form to open sukanya samriddhi account looks like:

List of documents to open Sukanya Samriddhi Account

Since the account will be in the name of your daughter but you will be the guardian and operate the account, the bank will also need KYC details of you as well as your daughter. You can use PAN Card, Passport, Driving License, Aadhar card, Voter ID card or a Bank passbook with a photo as ID proof.

You must have a birth certificate of your daughter because that will be used to ascertain the age of girl child. It will also be required for several other purposes in future e.g. for applying passport, taking admission on school, so you must get the birth certificate as soon as after birth. Gone are the days where you can live the birth dates mentioned in your mark sheet. For address proof, you can submit Passport, Aadhar card, Voter ID card, registered rent agreement and bank passbook.

You may require more or less same list of documents but depending upon where are you are opening the SSY account? If you are opening with post office, public sector bank or private sector bank, you may require one or more documents.

For example, if you are opening SSY account with ICICI bank and already have an ICICI saving, current or fixed deposit account and already submitted KYC details then you may not require to do it again.

Where to open Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna Account?

If you are blessed with daughter then you must be thinking of opening Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna account for her, which is a really good decision. You can open SSY account with either post office or banks and I highly recommend banks for their better technical platform, convenience, customer support and their presence over the post office.

The government has authorised both private sector and public sector banks to open SSY account. If you can open then prefer ICICI and SBI bank for opening SSY account because they are the biggest and most secure banks in India.

I like ICICI in private sector and SBI in public sector, but remember going to SBI branch is full day affair and you need to do couple of rounds to open SSY account depending upon their usual excuses e.g. no form, no officer, link down etc.

That's all about the list of documents requirement to open Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna account. It's not a big list, you just need common documents e.g. KYC details for you, which means ID proof and Address proof. You will also need to carry a photo of yourself and your daughter and birth certificate of the daughter is a must.

    1. No Dorababu, you cannot do anything without name. Best option is to correct the birth certificate to include name, You will need birth certificate everywhere e.g. education, immunization, banking etc.

  9. Though, the decision is right to open an account for my daughter's but the process is really tedious. Today was my 3rd visit to sbi branch and on 3rd visit they have informed me to bring my child along to open the account inspite of all KYC accounts available and in place. This is really surprising considering all the financial institutions allow to upload online kyc documents but such big bank is insisting to get my kids along to verify kyc
