ExpressVPN vs Cyberghost in 2024

Choosing a VPN might be difficult because each VPN is unique, especially if you've never used one of these services before. This is where we step in: we've thoroughly compared two top suppliers, outlining each service they give in an easy-to-read way. You should now have a clearer idea of what you are paying for, or at the very least, what to look for in future services.

ExpressVPN and Cyberghost,  Which one is better in 2024?

You place a lot of faith in the VPN you use to protect your data and traffic. As a result, it's wise to make sure you choose a reliable VPN service with a spotless background. We'll examine both ExpressVPN and CyberGhost with this in mind.

Background check and jurisdiction for ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN

A premium VPN provider with a long history of positive reviews is ExpressVPN. It has a relatively spotless history and has never encountered data privacy or public security scandals, as we have with IPVanish or PureVPN (logging scandals).

One minor exception occurred in late 2021 when it was revealed that an ExpressVPN employee had been collaborating with the UAE on hacking techniques before he was employed by the company.

Contrary to CyberGhost, ExpressVPN has also passed independent security and no-logs audits. The British Virgin Islands is where ExpressVPN is headquartered. Because the BVI has no data retention regulations and is not a part of any monitoring coalitions, it is the ideal jurisdiction for privacy. As we pointed out in the Surfshark review, we also see other VPNs integrating here.

However, a significant adjustment was made when Kape acquired ExpressVPN in the fall of 2021. The same business also controls CyberGhost. When you delve into the Crossrider, Kape has an interesting history.

Crossrider shut down its platform for developing browsers in 2017 and changed its name to Kape Technologies to focus on cybersecurity. Fortunately, we now know that despite Kape being the owner, ExpressVPN will continue to run independently under the same leadership and management. The same is true of CyberGhost.

Background check and jurisdiction for CyberGhost

CyberGhost

A team from Germany and Romania created the original version of CyberGhost as a Romanian VPN service. 2017 saw the acquisition of CyberGhost by Crossrider (now Kape Technologies), the company that also controls ExpressVPN. Additionally, we learned that Kape purchased Private Internet Access a few years ago (PIA).

Contrary to ExpressVPN, it seems that CyberGhost hasn't undergone any independent audits. Additionally, it has been criticized for having unreliable ad-blocking VPN features and was even found to have malware in its VPN apps according to 2016 research. (CyberGhost also performed poorly in tests for the assessment of CyberGhost VPN.) CyberGhost continues to conduct business under Romanian law, just as it did before being acquired by Kape.

Comparison

The least priced option for long-term security is CyberGhost, which annual subscription costs just $29.85 for the first year before escalating to $64.85 for subsequent years. This is still a good deal less expensive than ExpressVPN. On the other hand, once introductory pricing is taken into account, the two are approximately comparable on monthly and six-monthly plans, with only a few cents separating them.

These VPNs both provide money-back assurances. As a result, you may try out each VPN and cancel for a full refund if you're not satisfied. You will need to pay upfront in each instance, but it is simple to get your money back and you don't even need to provide a justification. While CyberGhost gives a 45-day money-back promise for its longer plans, ExpressVPN only offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

A variety of streaming platforms can be unblocked by ExpressVPN and CyberGhost. In fact, CyberGhost provides one-click unblocking for many sites, including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video—three platforms that most inexpensive VPNs have trouble with. It's important to note that there are many more geo-restricted platforms that these VPNs can unblock than those shown in the table above.

More nations have ExpressVPN servers than the majority of its competitors, including CyberGhost. However, altogether, CyberGhost has more servers. Unfortunately, ExpressVPN doesn't specify how many servers are located in each place. Contrarily, CyberGhost gives a breakdown of how many are available in each nation – there are always at least four, but in other areas there are hundreds.

It's a tie in terms of speed. CyberGhost's average speed was 58 Mbps, compared to ExpressVPN's 135 Mbps. To be clear, this is still quite quick, but ExpressVPN is superior. Only when several individuals are utilizing the same connection for data-intensive activities like streaming or torrenting are you likely to notice a difference.

Even though neither service has dedicated anti-DDoS servers, they do offer some amount of security. Your real IP address is masked when you use a VPN. As a result, if you are attacked, the VPN server will be overloaded with requests. Naturally, businesses are hesitant to describe in detail how they avoid these problems. However, CyberGhost's customer service stated that the server merely changes its IP address whenever a DDoS attempt is discovered. There may be a little period of downtime as a result, following which you can pick up where you left off.

Conclusion: Which one is better?

Even though both ExpressVPN and CyberGhost are excellent VPNs, we think ExpressVPN is the best option for the majority of users. It allows streaming from a wider variety of geo-blocked services because it has servers in more nations than CyberGhost.

ExpressVPN is also somewhat dependably accessible from within China, thus enhancing its usability. Of course, it also helps that it's the second-fastest VPN we've tested.
