Does NRIs need to update Aadhaar on Bank Accounts?

Recently many of my colleagues received an email from their banks e.g. ICICI and HDFC bank regarding their saving accounts to update Aadhaar on their bank accounts, the deadline to link Aadhaar with a bank account is 31st December. If you don't do this then your account will be frozen. Since many NRIs doesn't have Aadhaar card, so what can NRIs do to deal with this situation? Well, this is not required for NRIs.

The important thing to note is that only those NRIs who have a resident saving account has received such notification, NRIs which have NRE or NRO account has not received such emails. The reason is simple, Since NRIs are not eligible for Aadhaar card, they are exempted from any kind of Aadhaar linking.

Since an NRI cannot keep a normal saving account, it's also high time to convert your existing saving account to NRI saving account. This way you can hit two birds with one stone, first, you don't need to link your account with Aaadhaar card and second, you are compliant with the law.

Btw, now it's mandatory in India to provide Aadhaar card for opening a new resident saving account. Earlier only PAN Card was required, but now you need both PAN and Aadhaar. For those, who have not updated Aadhaar in their existing saving account or opened when they didn't have Aadhaar number, they can do by using ATM or online banking channel. Almost all banks e.g. ICICI, HDFC, Axis bank, SBI provide online facility to update Aadhaar in their bank account. E.g. you can see the link to link your Aadhar to SBI account below:

Axis Bank also allows you to update Aadhaar with bank account using ATM.

The rule to provide Aadhaar number to a bank account is mandatory for both public and private sector banks. So it doesn't matter if you have an account in ICIC, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra or SBI, Bank of Baroda, or any other public sector bank, you have to convert them into NRO to avoid them getting frozen after 31st December.
